“Digging Deeper” is an opportunity for you to continue the study of God’s Word throughout the week.

MONDAY
“The Truth About Truth”

1 John 3:19
By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before Him.

The phrase, “by this”, refers back to verses 17-18 where John reminds his audience that the evidence of genuine love is found in doing rather than in dialogue. Actions speak louder than words. However, the context of this verse transitions the reader and focuses on how we should approach God. One way for us to approach God is to dialogue with Him through prayer.

John wants his audience to know that they are “of the truth” and can be reassured when they approach God and are before Him. This phrase is in contrast to the description of Cain, who was of the evil one, in verse 12. In order to understand what it means for us to be “of the truth”; we need to have a clear understanding of what truth really is.

ABSOLUTE TRUTH IS: True for all people, in all places, at all times.

THE TRUTH ABOUT TRUTH:
•Truth is discovered, not invented.
•All truth claims are absolute, narrow and exclusive.
•Truth is not affected by the attitude of the one professing it.
•Contrary beliefs are possible, but contrary truths are not possible.
•Beliefs cannot change truth, no matter how sincerely they are held.
•We can believe everything is true, but we can’t make everything true.

THOUGHT: The truth is… we are of the truth.
