MONDAY
“God Is ___________”

1 John 4:7-8
“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.”

Have you ever wondered what God is really like? What images come to mind when you think of God? In this passage, John lands on one of the central truths about God. These verses are a concise summary of everything John is presenting in this Epistle.

~GOD IS LOVE~

It is important to reemphasize that John is not talking about just any kind of love. He uses the Greek word “agape” here to describe God. Agape is the highest kind of love. Although it is one of the most common words within the text of the New Testament, “agape” was actually not used much in other Greek writings of the time.

The word “agape” is almost impossible to find apart from the New Testament. Perhaps this is because agape love is from God alone and is characterized by sacrifice. It is the power that motivates a person to respond to someone else’s needs with no expectation of reward. John challenges his audience to “agape” one another.

CHALLENGE: Meet someone’s need with no expectation of reward.
