“I Know That I Know That I Know”

1 John 4:13-16
“By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent His Son to be the Savior of the world. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.”

Have you ever wondered if you really have eternal life? John wants his audience to know that they are secure in their faith. In verses 1-6 of this chapter, he appealed for right doctrine and belief. In verse 7-12, he calls them to love one another. In these four verses, he gives them three specific ways they can “know that they know that they know” they have spiritual assurance.

We can know that we live in God, and God in us, when we experience the gift of the Spirit (v.13), acknowledge the work of God in Jesus Christ (vs.14–15), and abide in love (v.16). It is important to note that these things are the grounds of assurance and not the conditions of it. In other words, these things are experienced in the CONTEXT of our salvation but are not the CAUSE of our salvation. Faith alone in Christ alone is the cause of our salvation from death to eternal life.
